What should I do to prepare for the training?
- Review the agenda and be prepared to join discussions throughout the tour. Think about questions for the forest management agencies (BC Forest Service, forest industry), regional district water managers (plant treatment operators, watershed management professionals), and researchers leading the tours.
- The expectation is that students use their time to learn and tie the learning to their research. Students are not expected to give presentations on their research, however they should be ready to share insights or ask questions during discussions.
- Participants will travel in a coach and/or school bus from location to location during the week. See agenda for pick up times.
- Following the guidelines at the University of Waterloo, participants are asked to wear masks when distancing is not possible. Masks will be required in the coach bus, in shared accommodation communal spaces, and at indoor meals when not eating. Masks will be provided for anyone needing them.
- Participants are also invited to take a voluntary rapid test prior to the start of ST3 week. No reporting on rapid test results will be required in order to participate as this is completely voluntary. We do however ask, that anyone that tests positive voluntarily cancel their participation in the training.
- Training will take place outdoors so bring clothing appropriate for all types of weather, including long pants for hikes and sturdy close toed shoes (required for some tours). Other items include: water bottle, sunglasses, note taking items, hat, raincoat.
- Each participant is asked to bring a High Visibility Safety/Traffic vest (safety vest option) for forestry watershed tours. The vest does not need to be a specific colour or make, just needs to be hi-vis (available at Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Mark's Work Warehouse and Amazon).
- Each participant needs to bring a hi-vis vest. Participants that wish to buy souvenirs or additional treats (i.e., alcoholic drinks) during the trip will need to cover these costs, no reimbursement will be provided. All meals, accommodations, and travel for the training will be covered.
- Organizers will gather information on any dietary restrictions prior to the training and will work with the caterers to provide suitable food for all participants. Please be sure to complete the email questions sent to you.
- Flights will fly into Nanaimo Airport and leave from Comox Valley Airport at the end of the week. Ground transportation to and from these two airports will be arranged. Dana Herriman will be contacting participants with details.
